Meditation
Meditation is a practice of looking inward, self reflecting, being quiet and breathing. All these things are meditation and this is only the start of what meditation can look like. I have studied and practiced meditation for over 30 years and my practice is almost never the same from one year to another. I have had even times where I have not done any practice of meditation. I find like massage therapy where the touch helps us to hear the bodies messages to us, meditation creates a platform of dialogue to our inner mind. We ask what is happening in there? We wait to listen for an answer. It is a chance to breathe into our experience in a way that is powerful and intimate. We may never share what we find with another living soul and that is ok.
When I started this journey in 1992 with my teacher I learned TM (transcendental meditation) which is a mantra centered style of meditation. We learned OM was a way to quiet the mind and allow it something to do while we rested in our breath. Then we learned there were many Sanskrit sounds ancient and potent that helped to move our minds into places of releasing emotional pain or create understanding about our lives. This technique I furthered when I began to lead Kirtans which is an East Indian musical practice of singing mantras and allowing devotional community to create harmony within body and spirit.
Later in life I began to study Buddhism from Tibetan to Zen and many others in between. I read Thich Nhat Hanh a wonderful Zen Master who shared with the world his walking meditation practice which allowed the busy Western mind to rest in focused slow movement and restful pace to the body. His beautiful way of speaking and writing changed me in wonderful ways. His compassion and allowing was always at the center of his message. Pema Chodron also was an amazing guide for me in hard times. Her book, Start Where You Are, A compassionate Guide to Life, changed my life literally. I still use her techniques to move big emotions through my body.
I love teaching people to meditate because I feel like I am introducing them to themselves. I get to see how they begin to shakily take steps towards listening to themselves in a whole new way. And then they begin to light up at the transformation that happens as they align themselves with body, mind and Spirit. Miracles can happen in our lives if we stay tuned to our inner world!
I hope you join me in learning about your personal meditation style through my guidance I can help you understand what practice is a good fit!
